Costantin Costantin
Under the mask

The calmness of the manners, the kindness in the requests. He moves between via Po and piazza Bodoni, a glass of milk and some coins to collect in a practical hat. Costantin was a border guard, had a quiet life, and the idea of being left without a roof over his head had never touched him. But his life changed quickly when his daughter became seriously ill.

Some friends tried to help him, he had several and in good social positions. He was forced to sell his house and car to pay for the necessary drugs, and, being the only one who could take care of his daughter, he began to miss work too often. He was fired. In a few months he found himself on the street, literally. After a few weeks, the fight against the disease came to an abrupt halt.

He thus decided to move to Turin, where some relatives moved years earlier. Costantin, if he wanted, he would have a roof to sleep under, now. But he doesn't want to ask, out of pride, and not to be a burden to others. He lives on gimmicks, on street games, on stories. He lives, from time to time, from some illegal work. He already feels lucky to have still found the desire to be in the world, despite his terrifying experience, after having felt abandoned and alone.

«I don't want to be a burden to anyone. I work everytime that I have the chance, otherwise I go ahead with alms. Nobody is worried about me, and this gives me relief instead of saddening me»

He has fallen in love, and who makes him enter a house of hospitality where he could not bring his partner? Sometimes, being homeless is a conscious choice, a way of life that someone gets used to, convincing themselves that it is the right thing to do.

These are the most difficult people to recover, where social inclusion paths often fail. From the words we have heard, there seems to be more confidence in the street, in which there is awareness of what can be found and what cannot.

*Each story is the result of the mixture of different stories that we heard during the investigation, in order to preserve the privacy of those who have decided to also offer wrinkles, eyes and smiles, which already have a lot to say.
